Bald Head Island Club – New and Improved
In today’s difficult economic climate and with fewer rounds of golf being played annually, many golf courses across America are cutting their golf course maintenance budgets, just to stay open. The Bald Head Island Club did something different by taking advantage of the poor economy to revitalize its 18 hole, 35 year old golf course.
With the Bald Head Island Club’s Board of Governor’s consent, the seaside course closed completely in early January 2010. Golf Course Architect Tim Cate was hired to move the course closer to the original George Cobb design, build in environmental enhancements to have the course better mesh with the island’s natural environment, simplify routine maintenance, and make operational improvements.
He partnered closely with the club to rework the golf course to take better advantage of the property’s natural topography and assets.
On May 22, 2010, all 18 holes reopened for play. 10 holes were entirely renovated and the other eight holes were slightly altered to become more playable and more strategic. Every tee, green complex, and bunker was newly constructed to modern day standards; many fairways were re-graded and resodded.
Finally, a state-of-the-art irrigation system was installed around the greens and in some cases the tees and fairways, tying back to the work done in 2005.
Bald Head Island Club essentially rebuilt the golf course. The main goal was to rebuild it in a way that would make Mr. Cobb proud. Fortunately, there were original plans from Cobb’s original design, and these, along with some experienced insight from Tim Cate, allowed the creation of a course that fits into its environment naturally and beautifully. The Bald Head Island Club has returned to its roots, unearthing the original design concept of legend George Cobb and in reality, brought to life by Tim Cate.
When you finally get a chance to see it first-hand you will understand why the Bald Head Island Club is such a special golf course.
